Aluminium vs steel driveway gates

We usually choose aluminium for driveway gate bodies, with weight and upkeep in mind. Steel still has a role where the design needs it, including some support posts. Compare the moving gate, its supports and its finish before choosing between the two.

For example, we may make a swing gate from aluminium and use steel posts to support it. That distinction matters when you ask what an aluminium gate includes.

Separate the gate body, supports and finish

A gate can use more than one material. To understand the proposed construction, separate three parts:

  • The gate body: the moving panel or panels, including their frame and infill.
  • The supports: the posts or other structure holding the gate in place.
  • The finish: the surface treatment that gives the gate its final colour or appearance.

In our swing-gate example, the aluminium body and steel posts do different jobs. The posts are part of the assessed support arrangement. Choosing aluminium for the moving gate does not remove that requirement.

If a quote describes an aluminium gate, ask what material the supporting posts will be and whether they are included. If existing posts are being retained, have their suitability checked for the new gate.

This also helps when comparing two proposals. An aluminium gate body with new steel posts is a different scope from an aluminium gate using existing supports.

Compare the proposed construction

Weight and future upkeep are reasons we generally prefer aluminium for the moving gate. We still assess the design, supports and automation together.

Where steel is proposed, ask which parts need it and why. That might be the gate body, the supporting structure or both. Ask how those steel components will be protected and what care they need.

A material preference does not settle the gate's hinges, supports or motor selection. Those need to suit the actual arrangement. You do not need to specify them yourself, but you should understand what is being proposed.

For security questions, ask about the complete gate and locking arrangement rather than choosing from a simple stronger-metal ranking.

The material name also does not settle the installed price. Compare the actual design, finish, automation, supports and included work before treating two quotes as equivalent.

A timber look does not mean a timber gate

If you like a timber reference, decide whether you want real timber or the appearance of it.

One option is an aluminium frame clad with real timber. Another is aluminium with a timber-look finish. In the second option, the visible timber effect is a surface treatment; the material underneath is still aluminium.

We can arrange a timber-look treatment on aluminium. Ask to see the available finishes so you can choose the appearance you want.

Real timber brings its own care requirements. Ask what treatment the selected timber needs and how often it needs attention. For timber-look aluminium, ask which finish is specified and how to care for that product.

A photograph can help explain the look you like. It cannot confirm whether the pictured gate uses timber cladding or a finish on metal.

Match the finish and care to the property

Powder coating still needs care. Dulux's powder-coating maintenance guidance calls for regular maintenance and varies cleaning recommendations by exposure, including coastal and industrial conditions.

For your gate, ask which coating or finish will actually be used and request its care instructions. Those instructions need to match the specified product and property, rather than a general maintenance-free promise.

Tell us if the entrance is exposed to sea spray or industrial pollution so the finish and care requirements can be considered.

Confirm four things before choosing

Before agreeing to the construction, confirm:

  1. What the moving gate will be made from, including any cladding.
  2. What supports it, including whether posts are new or retained.
  3. Which finish will create the colour or timber appearance you want.
  4. What care applies to those materials and finishes at your property.

If you have a preferred material or reference photo, bring it to the assessment. We can work through the construction and finish with the actual entrance in view.
